While most Tasmanian winemakers are characters, few can claim to be a former Olympian and Tour de France competitor! After nine years in Europe as a pro and having established himself as one of the world’s great road cyclists, Michael returned to his native Tasmania with his wife Mary. In 2001 they bought Velo Winery in the Tamar Valley and now produce some of Tasmania’s top wines. They have also opened a lovely café, the Barrell Room Café, open from 10 to 5 from Wednesday to Sunday, overlooking the river. Michael and Mary love visitors to drop in to the Cellar Door, try some wines, or stay for lunch and they will happily share the inspiring story of how one of the world’s top cycling sportsmen became one of Tasmania’s top winemakers.
