How does Tassie produce some of the world's freshest food? There is a moratorium on any genetically-modified produce, livestock is free-range and antibiotic-free, autumn days are long and balmy, and the rains that fall come from the Antarctic; as pure and unpolluted as it is possible to be.
With a latitude of 40 degrees South, it is no wonder that a couple of bright sparks had the brilliant idea of starting a winegrowing industry. Today Tasmania’s wine-growing regions produce some of the most highly acclaimed cool climate wines of any wine-producing country in the new world. Even the French have had to come to terms with the fact that Tasmanian sparkling gives Champagne a serious run for its money.
No matter where you stay, walk, cycle, kayak or camp you can be sure of one thing: you will be astonished by the quality of food and drink that is set before you.
Many of the B&Bs and homesteads offer home-cooked meals. Do accept this offer, for apart from the sheer joy and convenience of being able to relax at ‘home’, it is rare that you will get a better meal, a more convivial ambience or a better price. You will be dining on home-grown produce from their own veg patch; eggs from their own hens, fish from their streams and quite possibly wine their own vines (or at least their neighbours). Any dietary need can be catered for and conversation will flow as readily as the wine.
