The Wall in the Wilderness

At one hundred metres in length, the work of art known as The Wall in the Wilderness at Derwent Bridge is one of the most surprising highlights for anyone who makes the five-hour drive along the Lyell Highway from Hobart to Strahan.

‘The Wall’ is the lifetime’s work of just one remarkable man, artist Greg Duncan. The huge wooden sculpture is made up of hundreds of wooden panels made from precious Tasmanian timber and mostly from rare and protected Huon Pine, which was once used for shipbuilding due to its durability. Each panel stands some three metres high and a metre in length. Each has been intricately carved and together they depict the story of Tasmania’s Central Highlands, including that of the presumed-extinct Tasmanian Tiger and the harsh life of the region’s early settlers. It is without question Australia’s most ambitious piece of art.
